So... I am all set to replace the shock mount. BUT I need your "expert" opinions on something. The noises (creaks and pops) it makes are consistent with what I think a strut mount failure would sound like, but now that I have the wheel off, it looks like most of the lateral movement happens between the inside pole and outside assembly, not where the assembly meets the mount. Sorry for not having all the precise technical terms. But I think I have to replace the whole strut assembly before I drive much more. And I don't have enough money to buy one. What should I be doing? :|

When my brother's Jetta's strut mounts went, I replaced the bearings too. It's like new.
The shocks were replaced for preventative maintenance as well, I still got the original springs installed.

Can you take a picture of the specific area you're talking about? It sounds like you might just need new bushings.

I wish I could just replace all of it. Would be just as easy as replacing the mounts. The mount comes with a new bearing in it, so that part will be fine...

Yup. Shiny part moves around side-to-side a bit inside black part at this point, if I firmly shake the black part. Normal?

Definitely needs a strut assembly.

Want to buy an M3?

Yeah absolutely needs new struts. E36 M3? Price and location?

I should come see you when I get the chance but predictably, the 919's down with a worn drive chain.

Well, I really appreciate the advice even though it isn't what I wanted to hear. This is what I'd be looking at getting, I think:

Pending more reasearch, of course.

Oh, that sucks. I did find a bus that will take me to work from Lakewood, so that's a nice thing to know. Will probably be using that this week.

If you can take out yours, you can take one out of a junkyard. Got one near you?

Yeah I think I will just order it if I have to drive on it anyway. Wish I could do both of them.

I routinely check for e36s at local yards. If they get one, it's almost never an M3.
